Why We Need Diversity in Children’s Literature

According to statistics published by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center in 2018, 27% of all children’s books had an animal protagonist and yet, only 23% featured a character from a minority background, such as a Black, Asian, or a Latinx. In other words, the field of children’s literature is sorely lacking in representation. By promoting the importance of cultural diversity in children’s literature, Books of Hope aims to encourage cultural understanding and appreciation among children while also inspiring today’s youth to pursue opportunities they are passionate about, rather than being confined by cultural stereotypes.
