Why We Need Diversity in Visual Arts

Looking at the 145 highest grossing films of 2019, people of color constituted only 27.6% of lead actors and 32.7% of all film roles, according to UCLA’s 2020 Hollywood Diversity Report. In addition, according to research conducted by nine mathematicians, statisticians, and art historians from Williams College and UCLA, white creators were responsible for 85.4% of all artworks displayed in 18 major US museums; in contrast, there were only 9.0% Asian, 2.8% Hispanic or Latinx, and 1.2% Black or African American artists. Through Visual Perspectives, we aim to increase representation in the visual arts by celebrating and showcasing the work of minority artists.
